The mission of Westbay Community Action is to assist economically disadvantaged Kent County residents achieve and sustain self-sufficiency and stability. Our mission was born of the sweeping legislation created by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, soon after his pledge in 1964 to end poverty in this country by waging an "unconditional war on poverty."
Westbay remains committed to this pledge by connecting clients with programs and services here at our Warwick, Rhode Island Human Services Mall, and elsewhere in the community. Individuals and families learn to build economic self-sufficiency through education, life-skills training, counseling, and case management.
Working with clients on a daily basis provides a unique perspective into specific needs, trends, and the related cause and effect impact of economic and public policies. We frequently share this insight with local and state government officials, as well as the philanthropic community, religious institutions, and area businesses, for use in planning and working toward positive outcomes.
In situations where the plight of the disadvantaged is not easily heard among all the competing voices, Westbay, and other Community Action Programs (CAPs), unite into one strong voice to make their concerns, obstacles, and potential solutions heard.
As always, our mission is made easier and more effective by the compassion and generosity of friends and neighbors who volunteer their time or donate funds, food and other needed items.
