Lead Center

Westbay Community Action’s Lead Center works in coordination with the RI Department of Health to educate families on the dangers of lead and the actions they can take to prevent lead poisoning in their children. The Lead Center Case Manager helps families of children with elevated lead levels reduce their child’s exposure to lead and make their homes lead safe. Referrals to necessary services are also provided based on individual needs.

Programs and Services

Case Management

The Lead Center provides non-medical case management for families of children with lead poisoning. The Case Manager helps families coordinate medical care and provides nutritional counseling and lead poisoning education. A home visit is completed by the Case Manager to assess the home for lead hazards and assist in scheduling an inspection with a RI Department of Health Certified Lead Inspector.

The program is open to families of children with a blood lead level of 3.5 μg/dL (micrograms per deciliter) or higher. A referral from the RI Department of Health is required.

Outreach and Education

The Lead Center provides community outreach and education about childhood lead poisoning and lead-related issues to parents, families, childcare providers, etc. Call the Lead Center Case Manager to learn more.

Additional Information

Westbay’s Lead Center does not provide blood lead screenings. You can schedule a blood test through your child’s pediatrician or a local lead clinic. It is recommended that children are screened regularly until the age of six.
